Sorry to hear about your experience, and I hope that you are some way to resolving the infection and returning your site back to its pre-infected state.
In defence of Wordfence, I would say that although it is fantastic plugin, we should avoid thinking that just by installing it our security worries are over. There are a number of additional steps I take as a site owner/administrator, such as maintaining good password credentials and changing them regularly, keeping my local machine free from infection, changing the salt keys regularly etc etc.
The codex on Hardening Wordpress contains excellent advice on how to ensure that sites remain safe, over and above installing a strong security plugin.
