Are you on a 'good deal' shared hosting plan?
I administer sites hosted at many different providers. Certainly Wordfence can perform as in this thread on cheaper shared hosting plans.

Anyways, the short of it, your hosting plan and it's attendant architecture can make the difference between frustration & fast 'n fun ..
