I have added the following lines to the .htaccess file

ExpiresByType text/x-javascript "access 1 month"
ExpiresByType image/x-icon "access 1 year"
ExpiresDefault "access 2 days"
</IfModule>
## EXPIRES CACHING ##

this stores images, css, etc. on the user's browser's cache for the duration specified above per the type of file cached.
